Shi Lin Night Market (士林夜市)
August 7, 2006
Shi Lin Night Market, a popular student hangout on the north side of Taipei City, was surprisingly over crowded for a Monday night. Even a small amusement park was set up in front of the market! My sister’s friend told me that it had a lot to do with students’ summer vacation and tourists. Sure enough, besides lot of young faces, I overheard busy comments of Cantonese, Japanese, English, and possibly Korean passing by.
Unfortunately, the stands we visited didn’t live up to their usual reputation. I was disappointed; I didn’t come all the way for this mediocre food. My sister and her friend were shocked as well; they visited those stands before and highly recommended them to me, but today none of them lived up to their usual standard. Finally, they came up with the conclusion: Too many unprofessional students acted as part-time chefs in summer. So now you know, don’t visit the night market during summer time, unless you just wanna hang out with your friends and shop at millions of stores nearby.
On the other hand, the dessert (dessert tofu with tapioca or green beans) we had was not bad. Thank goodness that I got to taste my favorite dessert before heading back!
